I should start out by saying that I am a huge Vish Puri fan. I get very excited every time a new mystery comes out. No one brings the sights, smells and tastes of Delhi to life like Tarquin Hall. My mouth starts watering as soon as I open one of his books.
As always, Vish Puri is set to task with Delhi’s most probing mysteries. In this installment, Puri has to reunite ill fated lovers. Ram and Tulsi are in love, but their parents forbid their marriage due to caste differences. With the aid of the Love Commandos, a real life group who’s aim is to help mixed marriages, Ram and Tulsi try to escape the grip of their parents. Inevitably, something goes amiss and Puri is called in to solve the matter.

Part of the joy of this series of books are the odd cast of characters working along side Puri. His family, friends and operatives add a delicious spice to the already full bodied curries that are his mysteries. That being said, it should be kept in mind that these are not hard core mysteries, but rather tales that are humorous, character driven and give a good sense of place.

In The Case of the Love Commandos Puri travels a little further a field than usual, to Agra and Lucknow. As in all the Vish Puri mysteries, Hall has precisely transcribed the food and language of place onto the page, making you feel as though you are there. In particular, Tarquin’s use of Indian English is priceless. He gets the diction and tone dead on for a man of Puri’s age and status.
