Your chance to win a fabulous Japanese prize!
22nd June 2016
Four great Japanese treats make up the prize in our competition this month. From left to right above they are:
* A beautiful vanity purse hand sewn from vintage kimono material
* A copy of The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide. A very poignant story about a Japanese marriage with ‘the guest cat’ at its heart
* A copy of A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding by Jackie Copleton. A complex tale of life and love set against the background of the bombing of Nagaski on 9th August 1945
* An original origami bookmark crafted from ‘washi’ paper
To win this fabulous prize all you have to do is tell us in the Comments box below the one place you would most like to visit in Japan this summer. It’s that easy!
The competition closes at midnight UK time on Wednesday 29th June, and the winner will be the first name out of the hat on Thursday 30th June.
The very best of luck!
Congratulations to Sue Harrison whose name was first out of the hat when we drew the prize earlier…
Well done, Sue!
Tsumago for me I think.
I’d love to visit Cat Island!
Inspired by The Guest Cat: Aoshima Island.
mt fugi , of course
I want to go to a cat cafe!
I want to go back to Nagasaki to explore the history of the martyred Christians in Japan for a YA novel I’m working on.
I’d love to go to Hokkaido and stay at a ryokan or traditional inn so that I can experience a more simple Japan.
To sit on a bullet train speeding past Mount Fuji: that is my dream.
Would just be delighted to actually get there but would love to see the cherry blossom and visit both the old and the new Japan to compare and contrast
I have always wanted to go to Japan. Kyoto is high on my list and Tokyo, of course. I really want to stay in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.
I’d go to Kobe and visit the old foreign houses and go up in the nearby mountain to a spa and down by the port, too.
My first choice is the city of Kanazawa. It has one of the best preserved samurai and geisha districts in all of Japan, as well as being home to one of Japan’s best gardens in Kenroku-en.
The capital Tokyo first then the hilly regions.
I want to visit the Engyoji Temple in Himeji used for filming The Last Samurai in 2002 staring Tom Cruise
If I could visit one place in Japan, I’d visit a cafe called “The last tea house on the Nakasendo highway” in Hakkone. It’s a tea house which has been there for hundreds of years, on the old Imperial highway. It’s very atmospheric – dark inside, lit by lamps and there is a small fire burning in the hearth in the middle of the room so it’s smoky too. You feel like you have time travelled back two centuries when you step over the threshold.
There’s a forest of bamboo outside of Kyoto that I visited once over 25 years ago. I can’t remember what it was called, but I’ve thought of it often and wished for another walk in that cool, misty green place that was so otherworldly beautiful.
I think I’d have to wait until spring next year as I’d love to go to Kyoto, Japan to see the cherry blossom.
I would like to visit Nagasaki
