Your chance to win signed copies of ‘The Shogun’s Queen’ – Lesley Downer’s acclaimed new Japanese novel!

21st November 2016

shoguns-queenThis month we have a fabulous first prize – and two great runner up prizes – in our competition. The first prize is a hard-backed signed copy of The Shogun’s Queen, Lesley Downer’s acclaimed new Japanese historical novel, plus a geisha’s bag, plus an adult colouring-in book of 100 exquisite Japanese designs. The two runner up prizes are hard-backed signed copies of the same book.

Lesley’s signature over the Shogun’s gold seal on the first page of your prize!

The Shogun’s Queen is the 1850s story of a young woman from the backwaters of Satsuma. She is given by her father as a daughter to a noble Lord, and then groomed to become the wife of the current Shogun. She is clever and politically successful. ‘A clever woman never lets a man know how clever she is…’

This is a beautiful story, rich in period detail, and set against the backdrop of the country. It is meticulously researched, and an essential accompaniment for any trip to Japan. Read more about the book on this link.

To enter the competition all you have to do is write in the Comments Box below the name of the one Japanese city you would most like to visit. It’s that easy!

The competition close at midnight UK time on Tuesday 29th November, and the winner will be the first name out of the hat on Wednesday 30th…

The best of luck!

I would love to experience a tea ceremony in a pavilion in Kyoto during the cherry blossom festival, it’s been a great source of inspiration for many of my drawings & paintings but my only research source is photographs from the Internet. I hope to experience it myself one day. All those colours & history.

I would like to visit Takayama as it is surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the northern Alps and is a traditional town with a charming old-world atmosphere and fine Edo-period architecture. Friends have visited and said all of Japan was wonderful.

Kyoto – we were lucky enough to visit there last year and it was a great city – wonderful temples, fascinating culture in the Geiko area, an amazing food market, friendly people and fabulous restaurants. If I could only go one place in Japan ever again, kyoto would be it.
