GIVEAWAY – 3 copies of A Thing of Beauty … Travels in mythical and modern GREECE
16th January 2022
We are delighted to offer 3 copies of A Thing of Beauty … travels in mythical and modern Greece. Author Peter Fiennes
LONGLISTED FOR THE ANGLO-HELLENIC LEAGUE RUNCIMAN AWARD 2022
‘Peter Fiennes’s road trip around Greece [is] engagingly described’ Mary Beard, TLS
‘Fiennes is a brilliant and generous guide through Greece’ Observer
What do the Greek myths mean to us today?
It’s now a golden age for these tales – they crop up in novels, films and popular culture. But what’s the modern relevance of Theseus, Hera and Pandora? Were these stories ever meant for children? And what’s to be seen now at the places where heroes fought and gods once quarrelled?
Peter Fiennes travels to the sites of some of the most famous Greek myths, on the trail of hope, beauty and a new way of seeing what we have done to our world. Fiennes walks through landscapes – stunning and spoiled – on the trail of dancing activists and Arcadian shepherds, finds the ‘most beautiful beach in Greece’, consults the Oracle, and loses himself in the cities, remote villages and ruins of this storied land.

We had our honeymoon in Greece. The local cuisine is an absolute must, and if you get the chance for any boat trips take them!!
Unfortunately I have never been lucky enough to visit Greece, but it has always been on my travel bucket-list, especially the islands of Rhodes and Santorini.
I’ve never been to Greece, but I love reading or watching things about Greek myths and history. I’d love to take a tour and visit all of the amazing sights there!
I’ve never been to Greece so cannot say what my favourite place is. It does look a beautiful country.
Sipping a cold Mythos in a frozen tankard in Zante.
I haven’t visited Greece before but I love Greek mythology and the colessum
Went to Spetses (a Greek Island) In 1992 and it was beautiful. Pure heaven.
Our favourite place in Greece during out motorhome travels was the Mani peninsula in the Peloponnese, a couple of hours drive from Athens or the nearest airport Kalamata. The beautiful town of Stoupa lies on the west coast and has 3 very different beaches. Further south there are rocky coves & caves, turquoise seas.
Rhodes
Athens
I have never been to Greece but have enjoyed many of the Greek Myths from an early age. I went on to study them in greater depth at teacher training college in the 1960s. I would love to visit and explore its ancient history as well as to go island hopping! (in my dreams I’m afraid)
It’s been a long time since I was there, but I loved Rhodes, we stayed in Faliraki before it got busy and loved the history on the island, visiting Lindos and Rhodes Town. I would love to return there.
i like it in Skiathos
Skopelos for me
Kos is amazing
Mykonos Island looks lovely but ive never been there
Greece-so welcoming and the islands of Kefalonia and Skiathos beautiful to visit and hoping to return later this year.
ive never been but id love to!
I adore Greece but my favourite places are those islands which have no airports so your first glimpse is when you arrive by boat. I have had some wonderful holidays in Paxos, Ithaca and Skopelos amongst others.
I do love the history of Crete including Knossos
Santorini. Although I was troubled by the little donkeys having to carry some very large people up the hill from the port, it is a small but varied and beautiful island with plenty to see and do without the need for a hire car.
Visit the Acropolis in Athens
Glyfada is my favourite place – the perfect base to visit all the amazing architectural wonders of this beautiful land
Rome for the weekend was the only time I’ve been but I’d love to go back
Skiathos is a beautiful island — great for sailing or just a lazy sun and sand holiday with some excellent tavernas.
Corfu. If you visit the south there are still such beautiful traditional Greek villages to explore, like Lefkimmi.
I’ve never been but would love to go to Corfu x
Lindos in Rhodes was really worth a visit, very pretty and lots of interesting history. Would love to visit Santorini in the future.
Georgioupolis in Crete
I loved visiting the acropolis.
our favourite place is Prasonisi on Rhodes, where the Aegean meets the Med, in fact l have it as my screensaver
I’ve never been, but would love to!
We love CRETE, going back there in October
Some friends and I just spent a week in Santorini last November and it was lovely! I’m so glad we went in the off-season, too.
i just love corfu! went a few years back and rented a boat visiting some beaches that you can only get to by boat
My favourite Greek experience was taking the overnight ferry from Crete to Athens. The journey itself was really fun and we made it to the top sights early in the morning before all the crowds
Love the island and the blue domes of Mykonos
I love visiting Greece and kos has stolen my heart It is the birthplace of Hippocrates and it was so fitting that when we were onthe island my son phoned us to say he had passed his medical exams and was now a doctor
Crete is my favourite place.
I’ve never been to Greece but I would love to visit Athens
I loved Corfu back in the day. Gorgeous scenery around Agios Gordios and Kava isolated bet it’s a bit livelier now
I love Corfu
I love Crete
I like Santorini.
Crete is wonderful, particularly in the Autumn.
Would love to revisit teenage days in Kos, dancing on the beach and enjoying spaghetti pies for the hangover 🙂
I have never been to Greece, but would love to visit, so sorry I cannot recommend anywhere.
We had a lovely weekend in Greece, in a village called Nikiti. It was beautiful, I picked an olive off the tree, thinking it would tastes like the olives in the jar, but it was horrible!! But Nikiti was so picturesque!
My favourite area of Greece is the Mani peninsula. I was inspired to go there after reading Patrick Leigh Fermor’s account of this wild peninsula stretching down from the southern Peloponnese. You can still wander through the abandoned towerhouse villages and imagine the villagers feuding and firing at each other.
Escapism is what needed in this world today
Greece is a place I have yet to visit. I would love to go though. So sadly I cannot recommend anywhere.
If you go to Kos there is loads of archaeological sites to visit. Don’t miss the Temple ofAsclepius – even if you aren’t into the history the views over Kos and the sea are amazing
I went to Greece as a child and the thing I remember most is how hot it was! I got very burnt! So my tip is to use high factor sunscreen and top up throughout the day!
I’ve never been to Greece so I don’t have any top tips.
One of my favourite places is the island of Symi – for it’s harbour and 18th-century Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis on the south west of the island
Athens is steeped in history, but don’t go in August – I almost burnt alive!!
I love Corfu
Hello, I haven’t been to Greece but I would like to visit the town of Agia Anna in Greece because it is one of the main locations in Maeve Binchy’s book ‘A Night Of Rain And Stars’ and I love Maeve Binchy’s books!
I have to confess I’ve never been to Greece and know little about the country. Not for want of trying – we’d booked a holiday there for summer 2020 but then the pandemic came along and got in the way!
Athens
Love the Greek islands especially Corfu and hoping to go to Crete this year
The best place is Olympia, it’s incredible because you can envision what it was like all that time ago and imagine the games taking place, it’s so special.
I love Crete 🙂
I love Greece, been going for 30 years now! My favourite island has to be Crete – something for everyone! Stunning scenery, beautiful gorges to walk, fantastic food, lovely villages to explore, great beaches, wonderful historical sights, rich in history and such amazing people 🙂

I have never been to Greece but would love to visit Athens!
have never been to greece – but it is on my wish list to go in the next few years……….I would love to see the old villages a bit off the usual beaten track of the tourists
I am sad to say that I have never been to Greece as yet! I have read so many books on the country that it is on my list of places to visit
I’ve never been but I would love to visit Athens
We stayed on the Island of Thassos which quite often gets overlooked as it is the most northern island, but we had the most wonderful time stopping at a boutique hotel. The beach was fabulous and we had turtles nearby.
My favourite place in Greece is Naupflia
We visited Aegina when it first became a popular tourist resort. We had a wonderful time – stayed in a beautiful hotel with lovely food.
Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to visit Greece but I would love to learn about Greek mythology so maybe even better than a visit would be a book to teach me all about it!
