GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of “Gone” by Michael Blencowe

6th June 2021

We are delighted to be able to offer 3 copies of “Gone: A search for what remains of the world’s extinct creatures” by Michael Blencowe in our latest giveaway, It is a charmingly written and poignant book looking at the impact of human action on the animal world. It is truly thought provoking.

UK only Giveaway

3 copies of "Gone"

Inspired by his childhood obsession with extinct species, Blencowe takes us around the globe – from the forests of New Zealand to the ferries of Finland, from the urban sprawl of San Francisco to an inflatable crocodile on Brighton’s Widewater Lagoon. Spanning five centuries, from the last sighting of New Zealand’s Upland Moa to the 2012 death of the Pinta Island Giant Tortoise, Lonesome George, his memoir is peppered with the accounts of the hunters and naturalists of the past as well as revealing conversations with the custodians of these totemic animals today

Featuring striking artworks that resurrect these forgotten creatures, each chapter focuses on a different animal, revealing insights into their unique characteristics and habitatsthe history of their discovery and just how and when they came to be lost to us

Blencowe inspects the only known remains of a Huia egg at Te Papa, New Zealand; views hundreds of specimens of deceased Galapagos tortoises and Xerces Blue butterflies in the California Academy of Sciences; and pays his respects to the only soft tissue remains of the Dodo in the world. Warm, wry and thought-provoking, Gone shows that while each extinction story is different, all can inform how we live in the future.

I didn’t realise until recently there are over 40 000 species of animals in danger of extinction. What a great loss to the world it would be if beautiful creatures like the tiger die out. What a mess mankind is making of our planet!

I fear elephants might die out. They are so intelligent they would probably be able to tell something was wrong if they were one of the last few left.

Just about anything really ! Elephant perhaps as so many killed for ivory ,but just about any species may in the next fifty years as humans through greed mostly care nothing about animals and use and misuse for their own advantage.
This book sounds very interesting, maybe I would be heartbroken reading it, my aged p who is in his eighties and watches all the natural history shows on TV that I, as an animal ” lover ” avoid ,would be fascinated I am sure.

    Ah! The million dollar question!

It does rather depend on whose lifetime we are talking about here, as some of us are a little older than others! 🙂

Every animal lost is devastating for future generations, however Orangutans and other members of the ape family, share so much with we humans, that it is almost like witnessing the demise of a relative!

I’m so worried that Tiger’s will die out. They have been my favourite animal since I was a child and I’ve always wanted to see one on a safari or something, but I wonder if they’ll be around much longer.

It’s such a shame what humans feel they have a right to do to nature and animals.

I fear for the hedgehog. We’re lucky in that we have a few that visit our garden regularly but we certainly don’t get as many as we used to get, mainly because a large housebuilding company bought the fields by my house, ripped out the hedgerows and destroyed their habitat.
