GIVEAWAY! 3 copies of ‘Into the Tangled Bank’ by Lev Parikian (The British in Nature)
5th July 2020
Giveaway! 3 copies of Into the Tangled Bank by Lev Parikian.
We are delighted to once again be working together with publishers, Elliott and Thompson! Up for grabs are 3 copies (UK ONLY) of Into the Tangled Bank, in which the author ventures outdoors to consider the British in nature.
It’s often said that the British are a nation of nature lovers; but what does that really mean? For some it’s watching racer snakes chase iguanas on TV as David Attenborough narrates, a visit to the zoo to convene with the chimps; for others it’s a far-too-ambitious clamber up a mountain, the thrilling spectacle of a rare bird in flight.
Lev Parikian sets out to explore the many, and particular, ways that he, and we, experience the natural world beginning face down on the pavement outside his home, then moving outwards to garden, local patch, wildlife reserve, craggy coastline and as far afield as the dark hills of Skye. He visits the haunts of famous nature lovers reaching back to the likes of Charles Darwin, Etta Lemon, Gavin Maxwell, John Clare and Emma Turner to examine their insatiable curiosity and follow in their footsteps.
And everywhere he meets not only nature, but nature lovers of all varieties: ramblers, dog-walkers, photographers; loving couples, striding singles, families; kite-flyers, den-builders, grass-loungers; young whippersnappers, old codgers, middle-aged ne’er-do-wells; beginners, specialists, all-rounders; or just people out for a stroll in the sun.
Warm, humorous and full of telling detail, Into the Tangled Bank puts the idiosyncrasies of how we are in nature under the microscope. And in doing so, it reveals how our collective relationship with nature has changed over the centuries, what our actions mean for nature and what being a nature lover in Britain might mean today.

So pleased to win a copy of this book. I have started reading it and it is such a lovely book. Hopefully I will learn to slow down and really observe what is going on around me in the natural world.
We’re lucky to live a rural area so we’re able to watch the changes in our natural world all year round.
I love how dramatic these changes can be.
I love being able to truly bathe in the nature of the woods near our house. A real multi-sensory experience
I love how nature makes you feel calm and relaxed by just walking through trees.
I love how nature makes you feel insignificant!
Hello, I love how much nature is always changing and how beautiful it can be. Thank you for the chance to win.
Love how nature makes everything coexist together
Am isolating still , but loving the amount of birds and squirrels that are visiting my garden . A fox popped by for a drink out of the pond yesterday, till the cat chased him off ..
I love watching my daughter explore outdoors. It’s amazing seeing her discover flowers, bugs and leaves for the first time!
I love the distraction and mystery that you find on a good nature walk
For me being able to go out into nature helps with my anxiety and physical health, plus I’ve loved birds, bugs and lizards since I was very little, and that sense of wonderment on spotting something has never gone away, whether it’s a buzzard high above a field, or a little mushroom growing from a crack in tree bark. I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t walk every week, just me, trees and birdsong.
Having never been a big nature lover, for the first time during lockdown I started to notice so much more (even in the city I live in). I am now counting tree types and staring at hanging baskets on my daily walk.
I love seeing the new plant growth in Spring
I love that nature brings us all together and is so calming. It help me to be me again when the madness of the world threatens to take over.
There is always a way through the woods, even if it is a Tangled path, and Lev would be the perfect person to show you the way.
I love that nature is persistent, and varied. It gives me a sense of perspective and hope.
I’ve loved the time lockdown has given me to spend with nature.
This sounds fascinating and so well timed as do many have embraced our British areas of nature so much more during this time
I love how are there are no expectations. You can just enjoy and be free, and really connect with beauty around you.
I love the variety in nature. There are just so many different types of plants, animals and other living things that I can’t help but be fascinated by them all.
There is no better salve for the soul than taking time to ‘be’ in nature. An early morning walk surrounded by stillness, with just the sound of birdsong is surely one of the most simple, but greatest pleasures in life.
I love the light as it shines through trees, spotting shapes in the clouds, the sound of insects and birds chirping and tweeting and, most of all, the sense of well-being all these things give me
I feel in tune with everything when I’m in nature. Its so calming yet so powerful. I love the colours, sounds, scents and the richness of it all.
NATURE IS SO UNPREDICTABLE AND CURIOUS
The peace and tranquility of it, and realising that life doesn’t have to be so complicated or stressfull.
That it provides the ideal platform for quiet contemplation…
I love feeling the connection to the earth by placing my hands on trees, sitting on the grass to ground my energy and watching wildlife from insects, to animals and birds, with gratitiude deep in my heart for the beauty and majesty of the natural world around us which feeds our bellies, our spirits and our souls.
I love how it can always provide you with new wonders and things to see and learn. For me getting out in nature no matter the weather also helps me to feel in a calmer mood.
I love nature because it really is a healer. It makes you appreciate the little things in life and helps you to reset
Walking amongst beautiful trees, listening to bird singing
I love observing the new lives on ponds in the spring – especially moorhens and swans
Seeing life thrive infront of your eyes
A beautiful scenery, gentle sounds and a nice scent contribute to relaxation
Breathing in the fresh air!
I’ve loved being in lockdown because it has given me the opportunity of going out into the garden every day and watch all the plants growing, see all the different birds and insects – one advantage of being at home all the time.
The sights, sounds, smells, and nature is wonderful in everyway. The different greens of grass and woodland, the bracken unfurling, the ever changing seasons renewing. The call of birds, the sight of a nest. Seeing nature unexpectedly, a deer grazing, a mole pushing up a hill, a bluebell wood. Harvesting natures larder, berries, flowers.
watching trout swimming in a lovely clear stream.
I love seeing the beautiful flowers growing in my garden 🙂
When I lay on my back in Queen’s Park, I look up at the green leaves on the trees and marvel about how beautiful nature is.
I love how it is constantly changing
lying in the grass beside a river on a sunny summer day, watching the clouds drift by.
I love nature because it’s always changing. You are always seeing something new.
The beautiful, sometimes greedy birds in my garden. I can watch them for hours.
The beautiful glint of a dragonfly flitting over a stream. How nature has created something so perfectly jewel like in something as ephemeral as a dragonfly is a constant source of amazement and delight to me.
Brings a smile to my face.
Unexpected flowers growing out of cracks in concrete, or between curb stones.
I love walking through the woods, it’s so peaceful and quiet, gives me a feeling of great calm.
LOve nature so much from the changing seasons and the colours and furor they bring, to tending my bees and watching my flowers bloom
I love the peace that normally comes with it, when your having a walk in the woods and no one else is around. Also seeing the wildlife, spotting a deer or a fox!
I spend hours watching & listening to nature, from the small birds twittering at the food stations on our olive tree to the gulls ‘paddling’ on the lawn to fetch up the worms….to spotting kestrels hovering over farmland on the Downs.
At the beach there’s the fascination of rock pools, shellfish & multi-coloured seaweeds, or just staring at the waves….so calming.
Then there’s flowers, grasses & trees….all beautiful.
Nature is a great way of switching off from the every day dramas.
I love the changing seasons. It has been a pleasure to just sit in the garden and have the time to watch things develop and enjoy the birds, insects and field mice at work and play
I love the colours of nature, the sights, smells, sounds and the feelings it evokes
I love the calmness it gives me, rain or shine a walk in the woods or park will always take away the stresses of daily life.
Seeing foxes in surburbia playing together in the road at night. They often wake the whole house with their screaming but are very entertaining.
I allows me to escape from looking after elderly parents, I love the freshness, and new life that nature brings. So lucky to have a garden especially these past few months.
Nature is abundant hope for me: so often it is challenged and yet it recovers and renews itself. There’s nothing like spotting green buds after a hard winter or a heathland fire. Nature is inspirational and feeds my optimism.
I love walking my dog in the fields and woods, it gives me a sense of peace x
All nature is beautiful and is truly wonderful how it can flourish in sometimes the hardiest of conditions.
How it changes with each of the seasons.
Into the Tangled Bank:
I love the sense of freedom the outside gives us. The scent of the flowers and the sounds of the insects and birds.
