‘She’s just a paper mill girl.’
Seventeen-year-old Ruth Hardy works long hours at Grange Paper Works, with her younger sister Bea, and spends her free time caring for their ailing parents. Their meagre income barely covers their needs, so when Bea reveals that she is pregnant out of wedlock, Ruth knows even tougher times are ahead.
Ruth’s hard work at the mill does not go unnoticed and it looks as though luck might turn when she’s promoted. But when the arrival of Bea’s baby girl ends in tragedy, Ruth is left with no choice but to bring up her niece herself. However, news of Ruth’s plan brings a threatening menace close.
Although Ruth’s friendship with the girls at the mill, and the company of charming railway man, Mick Carson, sustain her, ultimately Ruth bears the responsibility for keeping her family safe. Will she ever find happiness of her own?

Staying in the UK, as we always do. Looking forward to North Yorkshire and Northumberland holidays this summer.
Love holidaying in the UK. Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay are some of my favourite places to visit.
I’ll be staying in the UK but would love to travel to Scotland.
We will be staying in the UK, so lucky to leave by the beach!! (Worthing)
definitely staying in england this year!
Currently on a 3 week holiday in our campervan dividing our time between Bridlington and the North Yorkshire Moors. The weather has been cool but mostly dry and perfect for walking. The peace, quiet and breathtakingly stunning scenery of the moors was what hubby and I needed after a year of shielding. Lots of fresh air in the daytime and reading every evening coupled with a digital detox…….what more could we need?
Oh can’t wait to get back out in our caravan X
After a year in shielding, we are going to make the most of our own home, garden and local area this summer as we are still taking things a day at a time. Hopefully we can plan a staycation in the UK next year.
I’ll be spending my summer holiday in my back garden but I’ll escape to different locations by reading books.
At home with my 88 year old dad – still taking everyday as it comes – day trips and LAUGHTER
Staying in the UK this year will maybe stay in Devon
We will be staying home which won’t be to bad as we live in Cornwall. Family will be coming to see us so that will be fabulous
We have a staycation booked in Devon. It will be my little boys first holiday and first time seeing the sea. I cant wait.
Leaving it to the last minute but would love to get away somewhere I haven’t been before. But the UK is amazing too – perhaps the North East coast.
Hopefully Switzerland to visit my family seen its been well over a year since I last could go and see them all
Where the book is set…..Sunderland, my home city -for this year anyway.
We’re keeping it sunny Devon this year!
myself and my partner hope to move house. So no plans for a holiday.
We will probably be hoping to go to north Wales somewhere near a beach.
I would love to go abroad but expect I will have my summer holidays in a tent somewhere by the sea.
We will be staying put. We’re incredibly lucky to live in Filey, so we don’t need to travel, we can enjoy all the fun of the seaside at home.
Staying at home in the UK safest place to be at the moment
My parents and I are hoping that I can make it over to their house in France this summer – fingers crossed!
hopefully in garden enjoyig the sunshine with my family and two brilliant gradaughters
I will be staying at home and decorating our new home, as there is so much to do
I will not be having a holiday this year as lack the funds, will take annual leave and enjoy walks in the local area and catching up with my reading
I’ll be staying in the UK, exploring more of my local area.
STAYING AT HOME
im hoping to visit the lake district
We will be staying at home this year. Maybe do a few weekend breaks but we’re saving to visit relatives in Canada next year hopefully
Staying at home, Gardening.
Quite fancy a cruise around the UK but not stopping, very relaxing and a chance to get away from it all but still not sure on all the testing we will have to do both before and after, if all else fails then the garden looks good.
We’ll be in the UK for the Summer but are hoping to go to Greece in October for our anniversary. I do plan to make the most of every sunny day in the UK though. BBQs, beach walks and fun in the sun are going to be a must!
I hope to get to the Lake District we missed out last year so fingers crossed
I would love to go somewhere hot later in the year when most people will have had the vaccine
We will be sitting in our garden looking out over fields and reading our books. Bliss.
We’re not planning on going anywhere on holiday this year. Not worth taking any chances with Covid rates being so unpredictable.
Hopefully we’ll have a nice summer to do little day trips to quieter places and have local walks.
I would love to visit the New Forest, maybe just for a day trip though as everything seems really expensive!
Definitely have no plans to leave the country for the foreseeable future, Covid passport or not!
We shall be avoiding all the tourist bottlenecks during the school holidays and will plan our own trips around those dates.
I suspect our National Trust Membership will take a hammering this year!
We’ll be staying in the UK this year. A friend has a flat on the south coast they have offered us the use of – not too far from home but in a peaceful village and with a gorgeous sea view. A perfect spot to recover from the last year.
Hoping for sunshine so we can relax in the garden and if we are lucky get away to Devon for a few days.
Hopefully, if the weather is OK, I will be quite happy sitting in my garden with books and wine!
Definitely staying in the UK! I’ll go and stay with my boyfriend but not sure we’ll want to do trips within the UK for quite a while yet. Mainly because of crowding.
I’m still uneasy about public transport, in spite of having both covid jabs. Plus my husband has only recently been diagnosed with a life limiting illness, so there will be no travelling anywhere for us.
I’ll be staying put in the UK this year. I’m not ready to travel abroad just yet. I hope to be able to visit some friends and relatives in Yorkshire and Derbyshire once the weather warms up a bit.
Hoping to stay with family and explore The Cotswolds. Things are looking up!
I’m lucky enough to live quite near the coast in West Sussex so beaches, cafes, restaurants, boats & a pier are just a bus ride away.
I look after my grandchildren part-time & they’d happily spend all day at the seaside…not planning to go anywhere else this Summer.
Hoping to visit my son in Cyprus later in the year x
