5th May 2024
We are delighted to be able to offer 3 copies of The Toffee Factory Girls by Glenda Young, set in Chester-le-Street, County Durham
Open UK ONLY
In 1915 three women start work at a toffee factory in the market town of Chester-le-Street, Durham.
Anne works for the enigmatic owner Mr Jack. She is highly efficient and whips Mr Jack’s disorganised office – and Mr Jack himself – into shape. However, behind her business-like façade, Anne hides a heart-breaking secret.
Elsie is feisty, fun and enjoys a good time. However, her gadabout ways get her into trouble when she falls for the wrong man in the sugar-boiling room.
And there’s dependable Hetty, who’s set to marry her boyfriend when he returns from the war. But when Hetty is sent on an errand by the toffee factory boss, her life changes in ways she could never imagine and a whole new world opens up.
The toffee factory girls begin as strangers before forging a close bond of friendship and trust. And, as the war rages on, they help each other cope through the difficult times ahead.

When sweet rationing ended 70 years ago I became a sherbaholic. Every penny of my pocket money (6d a week) went on sherbet dabs, sherbet fountains, flying saucers, sherbet lemons or anything that contained it. Chocolate! My weakness is chocolate – I especially love bars of fruit and nut, twixes; maltesers and tubs of celebrations.

That is SO healthy!
Jelly babies
I have a very sweet tooth, so the sky is virtually the limit with regards to my ‘favourites’.
I love toffees, however, now being of a certain age, the teeth are not to be relied on quite so much and dental work is a very expensive result for a few moments of enjoyment! 🙂
If I could only have one choice, I guess it would be a creamy, vanilla fudge, as it lasts a good long time if you suck it slowly 🙂
Adding this book to my wish list too!
My favourite sweets are chocolate truffles. You get chocolate, toffee-like fudge. So you get something of everything!
My favourite used to be Fruit Gums, but they don’t seem to make them any more. The gummies you can get now are too chewy
I love any sweeties with liquorice involved best of all, so liquorice allsorts, liquorice toffees, soft sticks of liquorice, pomfret cakes plus any others, I class all as my favourites.
Toffees are a no as dental treatment is rather expensive, although I quite like those chocolate jazzies (also called jazzles), which are a bit kinder on the teeth.
I used to love coconut ice – haven’t seen or thought about it for years – wonder if it is still made?
Jelly Tots … They are so tiny that I don’t feel so guilty!
I love liquorice. I used to eat toffees now I worry about my fillings!
