GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of “Women Who Walk” – PORTUGAL

22nd August 2021

GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of Women Who Walk: How 20 Women From 16 Countries Came To Live in Portugal by Louise Ross

3 copies of "Women Who Walk

What compels someone to leave their country of origin, which is the story before their departure? What happens to them on their journey to the new place, which is the story of getting from one place to another? And what causes them to finally land somewhere and decide to stay, if not for the rest of their lives, then for an extended period? Women Who Walk: How 20 Women from 16 Countries Came to Live in Portugal is a collection of 20 interviews with a diverse group of expatriate women. Their personal narratives tell tales of world travel and cultural immersion as a form of higher education, a vehicle for personal growth and expanded awareness of self and others, and an instrument for greater understanding and appreciation of the differences that today too often separate us. Readers will find these shared experiences, communicated honestly and openly, sometimes with humor, sometimes through tears of loss, courageous, uplifting, poignant and inspirational, a reassuring reflection of their own life journey.

My mum is the walker in the family, not me. She and her friend are walking the coast of Britain bit by bit. They’re progess has been put back by COVID, but they still managed to get in some of their local Kent coast. So far, they’ve enjoyed the North Cornwall Coast the most.

We walked up Great Gable, one of the biggies in the Lake District, and everything was shrouded in fog. We were half way on our descent when the cloud disappeared really suddenly and we had the most beautiful view of the valley and Wastwater. I’ve never forgotten it.

My favourite walk is walking through the woods near our home and then heading on to the beach. The beach goes from sandy to pebbly and it’s a gorgeous walk regardless of the season.

I remember doing the same walk as a family when I was a kid and still love doing it now.

This sounds like a wonderful project that I really resonate with. I’ve lived in a few different countries and now back in my native UK.

My favourite recent walking route that I’ve particularly enjoyed this past year (and felt very grateful for) is all around the coast at Falmouth in Cornwall. From Castle Beach, through Gylly Beach and around the headland and down the hill to Swanpool. Short and sweet and immediately uplifting.

My favourite walk is on the southwestcoastal path from Broadsands beach to Elberry Cove.

It has breathtaking cliffside views, with benches strategically placed overlooking the sea.

If you time it right at golden hour – the sea becomes see through and turns a tropical green/turquoise colour.

The perfect place to appreciate nature!

My favourite walk is along the North East coast between Roker and South Shields, on a clear day you can see the horizon that seems to go on for miles (probably does) and walking on the rocky and sandy beaches with its rock pools and natural environment. I could walk for days imagining the coastal life before people.

My favourite walk is one I did as a child: up the hills from the family home on the shores of the Isle of Arran. When I was around nine, I was allowed to take charge of my aunt’s dogs and that was one kind of adventure. But mostly I liked to climb alone through the bracken, along paths beaten down by the deer and the sheep, to a little ‘island’ between two gushing burns. I sat on the moss under the rowan trees, listening to the water heading toward the distant sea and thought about my place in the universe. On reflection, it was mindfulness long before such things were spoken of. My little island oasis of calm.

My favourite walk is from my house to Castle Woods where there is a green chain route that takes you right through the woods around Shooters Hill and takes in Severndroog Castle. From here you are so high up that you can see most of London from the viewpoint. The scenery around it is amazing and I am fascinated by what it would have been like to live in the castle itself. An tall, thin and quite small building that really only overlooks woodland and a rose garden. Always makes me think what a lonely old life it would have been.
