Talking Location With … M J Robotham – VENICE
GIVEAWAY – a copy of ABANDONED CINEMAS of the world
29th November 2020
We are so delighted to have a copy of Abandoned Cinemas by Simon Edelstein to give away. This is a beautiful and fascinating coffee table book that is absorbing and beautifully presented, and is a very poignant nod to times when cinema was in its heyday and when now, so many cinemas are closed because of Covid.
An outstanding photographic report which draws attention to the often dramatic fate of the world’s abandoned heritage and its frequently forgotten beauty.
The locations featured all have their own stories to tell, in a variety of voices, but with one shared theme: the fall from grace. Veteran photographer Simon Edelstein has spent 12 years travelling the world – the USA, France, Italy, India, Morocco and Cuba – in search of abandoned cinemas. Visiting far-flung cities in more than 30 countries, he discovered forgotten buildings whose timeworn facades still hint of their former glory.
These once-proud movie palaces, languishing under decades of dust, are far removed from their classic role as magnets for Saturday night crowds. With his skilful focus on their ageing facades, entrances and interiors, Edelstein brings these cinemas – and their splendid archaeological histories – back to life. This book is a tribute to reminders of the golden age of movie theatres the world over, now silent but not forgotten.

Joanna Lumley – I just love the sound of her voice.
My choice would definitely be Danny DeVito. He seems like such a genuine, interesting, funny, and kind person. I bet he has loads of great stories and I’d love to just chat with him!
Mary Pickford, just exuded timeless class. In my opinion there is no comparison now
I would love to invite Elizabeth Taylor.
It would have to be Meryl Streep! She has had such an interesting life.
Scarlett Ohara – this goddess had so much charisma and charm – love to dine and find out her recipe to sucess in life
I would invite Tom Hanks and his wife. He and Rita Wilson is the nicest couple in Hollywood. Their romance makes you swoon and they came over so much.
I would like to invite Tom Hanks. He and his wife Rita Wilson are known for being the nicest couple in Hollywood.
I would invite pioneer Laura Bayley (Laura Smith) so I could ask her about the films she was in, but also how many she made in her own right.
audrey hepburn!
Audrey Hepburn. Her biography was fascinating, and I would love to hear her stories.
Vincent Price – possibly the best ever actor!
Tom Hanks would be one of the most interesting I think, given the incredible array of movies he’s been in. If I could have more than one, I’d also invite Gene Kelly (for charm and charisma) and Carrie Fisher (for the grade A fun).
Cary Grant a real legend
I’d love to have Marlene Dietrich visit!
George Clooney if I had to choose – but I’d also love Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy!
Hello, I would invite Katherine Hepburn because I bet she had a very interesting life.
Doris day – if the conversation runs out she could entertain everyone with a song
Pacino or de Niro? I’ll go for de Niro because I want to know how he managed to incorporate those little gestures that linked back to Godfather I (de Niro was in Godfather II) and Marlon Brando, giving an almost seamless connection between the young and the old Vito Corleone. For de Niro, this performance started out in an understated fashion but the Sicilian and Italo-American milieu was so much a part of the background that his emergence as the Godfather melded into Brando’s towering performance in the earlier Godfather I film. I want to ask him, how much came from him (after all, he was born around there) and how much from FF Coppola?
It would have to be Alan Rickman for me. He played so many iconic characters!
I’d choose Michael j fox or robin Williams. Great actors.
I would invite Louise Brooks. She seems like she would be a great conversationalist.
Abandoned Cinemas of the World:
I would choose to invite David Suchet. He is Poirot as far as I am concerned. I am sure he would have plenty of tales to tell about the wonderful mysteries of Agatha Christie.
I would invite Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, which I think would ensure a very entertaining evening.
Wow! This sounds fab. I would choose Leslie Howard. He was a most fascinating actor, (his performance in The Scarlet Pimpernel is just brilliant) and it was a real tragedy that his plane was shot down during the war.
Meryl Streep as she has played such a variety of roles and I think she would have so many stories of her times on different film shoots to keep me entertained whilst I eat!!
actor to invite to dinner? Jean Gabin. “T’as de beaux yeux, tu sais.”
My husband Indri would love this book, before he came to England in 1964 he worked in a cinema in Malta, it was derelict for many years, and the site is now an apartment block. His favourite star was Susan Hayward, she of the gorgeous red hair, to have had dinner with her would have been a dream come true.
I would love to invite Audrey Hepburn. She was a delightful person and I feel that she would be a very lively interesting guest.
