Little known facts about best-selling author Lawrence Osborne

22nd August 2019

Lawrence was born in 1958, educated at Cambridge and Harvard, and has lived in Poland, France, Italy, Morocco, the United States, Mexico, Thailand and Istanbul. He’s currently living in Bangkok. Phew!

As a journalist, he has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Conde Nast Traveler, Forbes, Harper’s, and many other publications. His feature for Playboy, ‘Getting Drunk in Islamabad‘, won the Thomas Lowell Award for Travel Journalism in 2011.

Lawrence has written five novels to date, all of which are currently being adapted for the screen. ‘Beautiful Animals‘, published in 2017, is set on the Greek island of Hydra and beautifully captures place, time and characters. Read TripFiction’s Tina’s hugely positive review here.

Osborne was asked by the Raymond Chandler Estate to write a new Philip Marlowe novel. ‘Only to Sleep’ was published in 2018 and draws on his time working as a reporter on the Mexican border in the early 1990s.

Like Graham Greene, Osborne writes ‘moral thrillers’. And as the author says himself: ‘For me, place is everything…I spend more time thinking about that than anything.‘ The perfect author to include in a TripFiction newsletter!
