It’s not unusual for me to read good books – in fact I generally give up quite early on the books that don’t grab me instantly. What is unusual, is for a book to be so inspiring and moving that I really don’t want it to end. Really, really don’t want it to end.
This book follows Nuri and Afra’s impossible journey as they leave Aleppo and attempt to reach England where his cousin is waiting for him. Its a truly awful story, full of fear, extortion, suffering and abuse. Something which feels all too real. And yet in amongst this, the language used and the descriptions told are so beautiful it almost makes you teary. I really don’t know how Christy Lefteri does this. The relationship between Nuri and Afra is incredible, the detailed descriptions of emotions, nature and of course bees, beautifully blends with the horrendous circumstances this couple finds itself in. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
