#TFBookClub reads “Do Not Become Alarmed” set in CENTRAL AMERICA

19th June 2017

#TFBookClub July/August 2017

Our first two outings for the #TFBookClub have been a great success. We have been #OnLiteraryLocation with Rosanna Ley’s “The Little Theatre By The Sea” (SARDINIA) and we have explored the sense of history in PRAGUE, reading Prague Nights by Benjamin Black.

Do Not Become Alarmed by Maile Meloy is published on 6 July 2017, and is set in CENTRAL AMERICA.

CENTRAL AMERICA

Come and join us reading this book! It is a fast-paced thriller, seen through the eyes of parents and children, the older generation portrayed as weak and flawed, the younger as surprisingly resourceful and resilient. The plot includes some challenging scenes to read, but it certainly grips the reader’s attention throughout. This book is being promoted as one of the top Summer Reads for 2017!

To get the ball rolling, the publisher has kindly offered the #TFBookClub a number of paperback copies (UK only) and a number of digital copies (via NetGalley) for those who prefer that format, and for those who are outside the UK.

If you would like to apply for a copy to read along with us during July and early August 2017, just leave a COMMENT below about your own perceptions of Central America (either real or imagined). Alternatively, the action kicks off on a large cruise ship…..what are your own experiences cruising, and have you had a memorable adventure, either on-board or ashore?

Please tell us whether you prefer paper (UK only) or digital or either. The first names out of the hat on SATURDAY 1st July 2017 will be sent copies by the publisher. After that we can all get stuck in and share our thoughts over the subsequent weeks.

We will be in touch at the beginning of July if you are one of our lucky readers!

Thank you to Penguin/Random House for supporting the #TFBookClub.

I have only been to Mexico so far but have always had a yearning to go to Peru, from having read ‘Royal Hunt of the Sun’ at school! ( Actually I think that’s South America!) Like others, I have had the impression of Central America as full of dictatorships, drugs, gangs & guns! I am sure there is a more beautiful side to it! I would love to win a paper copy, if possible! 🙂

I am leaving on a cruise in a few weeks and will be stopping in three Central American countries so I would love to read this book. A digital copy would be appreciated.

My only visits to Central America have been to Mexico, where I found the people to be warm and welcoming, something my daughter, who has worked in several countries in the region, tells me is the same everywhere she has been. In fact she is married to a man from Panama, and although we have never met his family in their own country, we have spent time with them in several other countries and always been made to feel as if we are part of their own family. I’d love to explore more of the region, whether in person or on the printed page. Talking of which, I’d like the paper version please.

I haven’t been to Central America… yet! But I imagine it’s a vibrant and colourful place to visit with mountains high above sea level but lush vegetation in the valleys, a cacophony of colour and bird and animal calls in the forests, spectacular waterfalls, Mayan temples, faded colonial buildings in the main cities and lively markets full of people with mountains of fruit and vegetables and bold fabrics on the stalls. I imagine it’s a place of contrasts and variety with the coastline bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east, a place subject to the trade winds and with a rainy season but dry winters.

Paperback if I get chosen, please.

Central America has some amazing spots – some particular favourites are the Mayan temples of Tikal (Guatemala), rafting the Pacuare (Costa Rica) and Ometepe & Solentiname Islands (Nicaragua). Suchitoto in El Salvador was also a very cool place, and wildlife in Costa Rica especially is world class. Almost everywhere I’ve been has also been by and large extremely friendly and welcoming
    Paperback please.

I have friends from various Central American nations, having worked there as missionaries. They loved it all, found some conditions harsh and sad, but grew to love the people.
I’d love a copy, please. Paperback or digital.

I’ve never been on a cruise and Central America is a bit of a mystery too! I have an, unfair, image of it being over run with dodgy drug runners. I imagine some of the scenery must be phenomenal though, I’m thinking lush green forests and sweeping coastlines! (paper referred if I’m chosen)

I have certainly do have a memorable story about a cruise! In 1994 I went on a cruise round the Med on a small cruise ship. I was a single passenger and shared my cabin with another single (a woman!!). We got on well until we met a nice looking and well spoken man at the cocktail party put on for all the single passengers. He was employed by the company to give talks about the trips ashore and was entitled the ship’s lecturerer. We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and visited many of the ports of call together. Unfortunately the cruise company folded that year and he came to live with me. We married and later revisited many of the ports in our campervan.

I have never been to Central America or on a cruise. I imagine CA to be hot, mysterious and exciting. I imagine a cruise to be glamorous and romantic;)
I would like either paperback or digital
