#TFBookClub reads “Trouble in Nuala” set in CEYLON (SRI LANKA)

17th October 2017

#TFBookClub November/December 2017

Our first four outings for the #TFBookClub have been a great success. We have been #OnLiteraryLocation with Rosanna Ley’s The Little Theatre By The Sea (SARDINIA), we have explored the sense of history in PRAGUE, reading Prague Nights by Benjamin Black, we have been on a real adventure to CENTRAL AMERICA with Maile Meloy’s Do Not Become Alarmed, and we have been immersed in an intense relationship between two female writers in Exquisite by Sarah Stovell, set in NORTHUMBERLAND and the LAKE DISTRICT.

Our new #TFBookClub outing is to exotic SRI LANKA (formerly Ceylon), where Harriet Steel introduces us to Inspector de Silva for the first time in Trouble in Nuala.

TFBookClub

When the Inspector moves with his English wife, Jane, to a new post in the sleepy hill town of Nuala, he anticipates a more restful life than police work in the big city entails. However an arrogant plantation owner with a lonely wife, a crusading lawyer, and a death in suspicious circumstances present him with a riddle that he will need all his experience to solve. Set on the exotic island of CEYLON in the 1930s, Trouble in Nuala is an entertaining and relaxing mystery, spiced with humour and a colourful cast of characters.

Read our #TalkingLocationWith interview with Harriet, and a recent Q&A interview with her, to find out more about her background, her writing career and why she chose CEYLON as the setting for her Inspector de Silva series.

#TFBookClub has a number of paperback copies (UK only) and digital copies for those who prefer that format, and for those who are outside the UK.

If you would like to apply for a copy to read along with us during November and early December 2017, just leave a COMMENT below about your thoughts on SRI LANKA.

Please tell us whether you prefer paper (UK only) or digital or either – by midnight, 31st October 2017. The first names out of the hat on WEDNESDAY 1st November 2017 will be sent copies by Harriet. After that we can all start turning the pages and share our thoughts over the subsequent weeks.

We will be in touch at the beginning of November if you are one of our lucky readers! Don’t forget, applications close midnight, 31st October.

I’m fascinated with Sri Lanka yet know nothing about it. Would love to read along. Her books have been on my TBR pile since your interview with her a few weeks ago! I’m outside the UK.

All I know about Sri Lanka is that a few times in the 1970s, planes I was on made transit stops at Colombo airport and it was the warmest, friendliest one I’ve ever been to, full of flower sellers and cats. So my impression of the whole country has been formed from that!
I’d prefer the print version please.

I have never been to Sri Lanka before, but it is definitely on my list of places to go. Maybe reading this book will help to inspire me a little more? A paper copy would be preferred.

I’m yet to travel further than North America and Western Europe, however my sister has been and loved it. I’d love to submerge myself in a literary adventure Asia to escape the ever decreasing temperatures in the UK!

Love the Sri Lanka of today – it is a beautiful country full of beautiful people. The history is fascinating however I find the romantic notion of colonial living is tinged with embarrassment about British dominance in this and other parts of the world. I really enjoy reading about that period and understanding how it was for both the Brits and the natives….I am happy with either digital or paper – thank you!

Few of us can travel to all the wonderful places we know exist , but reading fiction set in an exotic location can satisfy our curiosity. Fiction writers give us so much insight into time and place, I am always impressed by the level of research they do. I would love to read this, in any format.

Have been to India and Sri Lanka is on my bucket list. Love the idea of going there physically or mentally with an actual book in my hand on a cold night snuggled up in a warm bed – bliss

I’m delighted to discover this today–on sale for 99¢ and I need a book for local library contest (prize = a Kindle) for book recommendations and this is not in our library system yet–and all entries will be listed at the end of the contest! Win-win as I settle in for a good read today, far from rainy northwest Seattle. But I needn’t be entered in your contest–just wanted you to know I got the book because of your review!!

I would love to win a copy of this! I visited Sri Lanka back in the early 80s & found it to be a beautiful country. I particularly liked Sigiriya, with the ancient cave drawings. I still enjoy reading books set in Sri Lanka, Romesh Gunesekera is one favourite author. Keeping my fingers crossed for an author new to me to become my favourite! 🙂
