Sitting on the balcony of an apartment on Via Giuseppe Garabaldi with Aperol Spritz in hand, watching the sun go down over the grand canal. A full masted cruise ship glides by with twinkling lights, along with the vaporetto, taxis and small craft. Then a wander along Riva S. Biasio to find a local restaurant, and ending the day at Cafe Florian and a dance in St Marks Square to the band.

I was meant to be in Venice for my honeymoon in March, sadly it was cancelled but I can’t wait to return. There is a little bridge in Dorsoduro, you reach it by walking at the back of the Guggenheim towards Santa Maria Della Salute. When I crossed it and looked back I noticed a room with two picture windows, one looking towards the Basilica and the lagoon and the other over the Grand Canal. I imagine myself in that room sometimes, laid on the bed with the water light dancing on the ceiling in the morning. Or at night seeing lamps and boat lights reflecting off the Grand Canal. Listening to boats creaking and the sound of water as the city quiets. No one would know I was there, but I would know the whole of Venice is there waiting for me.

My dearest wish at the moment is to be at an opera performance in Teatro La Fenice on Campo San Fantin having arrived there by vaporetto via the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark. I would arrive about 45 minutes early to enjoy the experience and to people watch – always a treat at an Italian opera venue. Maybe my ticket would be for a Premiere, in which case I would be dressed in the (almost) obligatory black dress and pearls, my outdoor wear having been placed in the (free) cloakroom on the premises (ROH please note).

My lovely family took me to Venice for my 50th birthday last year. A highlight of the trip was sitting in a little side street cafe where the elderly chef made bellinis from fresh peaches in front of us. I would go back to Venice in a heartbeat! I read Donna Leon’s Death at La Fenice while there (I love reading books set in places where I’m on holiday!)

Hello Helen, I can confirm there is indeed a Street of the Assassins (Calle dei Assassini) which is just of the ‘filled-in canal of the Assassins) (Rio Terà dei Assassini).

      All good wishes, Philip.
