Beautifully-written book by an award-winning Afrikaans author
- Book: Bundu
- Location: Mozambique, South Africa
- Author: Chris Barnard
In an isolated area of drought-strickened Africa, a small clinic is overrun by a starving community. A cast of characters — a researcher, ex-nun, dubious medical professional, self-taught pilot and mysterious recluse — are compelled in their own ways to help. But how much can they do when no one is willing to take responsibility?
At times frustrating, appalling, heart-breaking and wonderful, Bundu exposes a side of Africa that few ever see. In the midst of it all, goodness rises from this motley crew of heroes and a romance builds as life boils down to its simplest forms.
Bundu is a beautifully-written book by award-winning Afrikaans author, Chris Barnard. The setting itself, in a sort of no man’s land on the border of South Africa and Mozambique, and the intimacy of wild animals with humans, is a fascinating place in itself. The horrendous tragedy of starvation and drought is only amplified by the lack of concern from formal organizations. Add to this the eccentric cast of characters, many troubled, damaged or struggling in one way or another, and you have the makings for a great story. But, in addition to all of this, Barnard has weaved a romance through the story that gives pause to another level of emotion. How can there possibly be room for love, happiness, friendship when everyone around you is dying?
There are scenes in this book that will stick with me, haunt me, for a long time. But I enjoyed seeing Africa through the unique lens of this talented author and would recommend this book to anyone interested in Africa or Afrikaans literature.
