Half Blood Blues is an ideal travel companion for a music lover visiting Berlin and Paris. The story focuses on two black band members during WWII. In the increasingly unwelcoming world of Nazi Berlin they flee to Paris to record with Louis Armstrong. Interspersed with the music is a band in hiding, a blooming love affair and decades old secrets. As intriguing as this sounds, I found the reading to be rather slow at times. Others have suggested that this is because of the slang used. For me it was more about getting into the heads of the main protagonists, neither of whom I liked.
