What a compelling read. I lived in Jakarta for six months and yet knew know of it’s history during WW2. Haunting, emotional and satisfying… totally recommend this book. I loved the combination of the history with the modern day (part of it set in Cornwall). I wept and and I smiled but most of all I cheered on these two women.

This would be a brilliant book to read before you travel to have a feel of the history or tp add to the sense to place while you are there…

Note: I read this book in proof form (ARC) it comes out on 27th March 2014
