Papillon is a true story of one man taking on near-impossible odds in an attempt to win back his freedom. The events, characters and adventures that he describes, set in various locations along the north coast of South America, are, in themselves, enough to make this a great book. However, Charriere is also a brilliant writer, and the clarity and honesty of his writing, along with his eye for detail, make it beautiful to read.
