WW2 crime mystery set in Canterbury, Kent (and London)
A chance to win two great books – voted the top reads of summer in a straw poll we ran over on Facebook. Plus a ‘Book Nerd’ cotton tote bag!
16th October 2015

The Northern Hemisphere summer is over… and, according to a straw poll we ran over on Facebook recently, two novels have really caught the imagination of readers over these past few months. They are The Tea Planter’s Wife by Dinah Jefferies and The Ice Twins by S K Tremayne. The Tea Planter’s Wife is a brilliant story of a 19 year old newly wed who steamships out to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the 1920s to live with her husband. She finds clues there to a hidden, unspeakable past… The Ice Twins is a sharp psychological thriller set on a remote Scottish Island. Which twin – Lydia or Kirstie – dies in an accident? A more complicated question than you might perhaps imagine!
To win copies of both books – plus a superb ‘Book Nerd’ cotton tote bag – all you have to do is write the name of your favourite book of the year so far in the Comments box below. It really is that easy!
The competition closes at midnight UK time on Friday 30th October. The winner will be the first name out of the hat on Saturday 31st…
The very best of luck!

Congratulations to Anne Fuller whose name was first out of the hat when we made the draw this morning. She is our prizewinner this month.
Well done, Anne. We hope you enjoy the two books!
The woman who stole my Life” by Marian Keyes. So funny and the main character Stella is so loveable. It is set in a small village near Dublin and also in New York City. Loved all the characters and twist and turns their journey together takes. Also loved JoJo Moyes After you….set in London. although I did prefer the prequel, Me Before You. Good Luck everybody xx
Moving – Jenny Eclair
the best book I’ve read this year so far, was me before you by jojo Moyes…I kept bursting into tears for days after at the slightest thing!
The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma – totally understand why it’s shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize this year. Absolutely loved it. (And will post a review soon!)
We are all completely beside ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. Not too far in before you’re re – evaluating everything you’ve just read!
Well, it’s not a YA because I rarely read one, ehehe, but it’s definitely Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley. I love her writing and the drama of course! 🙂 Thank you so much for the chance!
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier
Without a trace by Lesley Pearce
Silent Scream- Angela Marsons
Holy Island:A DCI Ryan Mystery by LJ Ross
So many to chose from but almost finished the memory book by rowan Coleman and think it could be that one x
Orphan Train
I have just finished reading ” The Shoemaker’s Wife” by Adriana Trigliani. Set firstly in the Italian Alps and moving to America it tells the story of Ciro and Enza Lazzari. It is a wonderfully evocative tale of lives which become intertwined over some 30 years. I particularly liked the descriptions of the tiny Italian village set high in the mountains and of the Italian “ghetto” where they first settled in New York.
An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris – fascinating.
My favourite book of the year is The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson.
Not Forgetting the Whale, by John Ironmonger. A delightful tale of community.
I loved A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley which is set in Paris, past and present.
Burial Rights by Hannah Kent is my favourite .
Favourite of the year so far? Thats dificult! But one of the books that I fell in love with this year is Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson. Its just too good for words!
It’s so hard just to choose one! But one that stands out is ‘Ready Player One’ by Ernest Cline. Videogames, geek-i-ness, a bit of romance, and overall 1980’s nostalgia! What’s not to love?!
My favourite book of the year so far is The New Woman by Charity Norman.
My favourite book of the year so far? Island of a thousand mirrors by Nayomi Munaweera. Set in Sri Lanka it combines the beauty of the tropical island with the brutal horrors of war. These contrasting features come together through the characters who display essential human emotions we all share – love, compassion and grief.
The All of It by Jeanette Haien was outstanding. Set in Ireland with a priest, a parishioner’s confession and salmon fishing. A brilliant gem.
Ohhhh a hard question! I have read quite a few books lately but my stand out book is called The Blue by Lucy Clarke. It’s a fab read with lots of intrigue and a great page turner!
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I still can’t stop thinking about the storyline!
A difficult one, though. The Abrupt Physics Of Dying by Paul E. Hardisty – His first novel. Outstanding!! Published by Orenda Books.
I really enjoyed “Thin Air” by Ann Cleeves. It brought back happy memories of my holiday in the Shetland Islands.
I enjoyed The Well by Catherine Chanter
“The Other Side of the Mountain” by Fiona Cane was elctrifying.
How can I choose?? I think ‘Just One more Summer’ by Julie MacGowan. Characters had depth, fun, thoughtful at turns, just a good read x
The Ghost Fields – Elly Griffiths
I loved A Man named Ove, a truly beautiful read.
My favourite book so far is a debut novel by an Australian author – Risk by Fleur Ferris, riveting reading about the dangers of social media for teenagers.
My favorite book so far would have to be Pretending To Dance by Diane Chamberlain.
I really enjoyed THE RACE FOR PARIS by Meg Waite Clayton.
My favourite so far is One wish in Manhattan by Mandy Baggot.
‘A Little Life’
Fallen Land by Patrick Flanery
I loved Birdbrain by Virginia Arthur, a novel ab out a woman’s journey to developing her ecological awareness, with a wonderful sense of place (mostly California, but also other parts of the USA)
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
