This is a simplistic story mostly told through the eyes of a 9 year old boy. He lives in Germany during the war and the Holocaust. His father is a Commandant in charge of Auschwitz and so they move to Poland. |Bruno, the 9 year old is curious as to what this fence is all about and in exploring, he meets a young boy his age on the other side of the fence. They become friends and talk through the fence for over a year unbeknownst to anyone.
This book would be a good place to start when trying to explain the Holocaust to young teens or pre-teens. It is well written and shows how naïve a 9 year old can be. It flows nicely, but it was a little difficult to read knowing what was going on. The ending blew my mind! It is so sad.
I did like this book even though the subject matter is difficult, it really did not deal with the atrocities done during the Holocaust. It would be a good book for preteens or younger teens to get a conversation started about this difficult subject.
Thanks to TripFiction for providing me with a copy of this book.
