Meeting the Englishman

I picked up The Papas and the Englishman whilst eating dinner in the charming Thoukididis Guest House in Kapesovo, one of the 46 villages of Zagoria in the remote Pindus mountains of north west Greece, near the Albanian border.
It tells the story of Roy Hounsell and his wife Effie, and how they left England for an adventure in Corfu, before moving on in 1991 to buy and renovate a traditional stone house in Koukouli, another of the Zagorian villages.
Serendipitously, my walking route took me to Koukouli the following day. On a hot July morning I asked the local taverna owner if he knew Roy Hounsell.
What followed was a slightly surreal, and wholly special experience, and possibly the essence of TripFiction:

The book transports you to Corfu and then to the magical mountains and village communities of Zagoria. I completely understand why Roy and Effie made Koukouli their final resting place.
