A visit to Delft made the book worth the read.
- Book: Girl with a Pearl Earring
- Location: Delft
- Author: Tracy Chevalier
I listened to the audio book as I sat on the train to Delft. Thanks to the book, I knew the key players in Vermeer’s life which made the Vermeer Information Center exhibits more interesting. The market square was empty, but I imagined the hustle and bustle of market days based on the descriptions in the book. As I wandered beside the canal and the old church I was glad to have the context of the book to guide my experience of the city.
I think if I had not been visiting Delft, this book would have been much too slow to finish. I wasn’t thrilled with the plot, but I will say it was better than the film. The film lacked any narration, which would have made the plot attempted by the film more understandable.
