This is a bit of “Smack-me-in-the-face” Parisian chic – the action scoots between Tooting and Paris and tells of the burgeoning romance between Evie and Rob, ending in Scotland, via Nice (so the action does get about a bit). But catch this description of Nice, isn’t it just the thing? “..we were driving a little too fast along the palm-tree-lined Promenade des Anglais, flanked on one side by the glittering turquoise Mediterranean, which was sprinkled with billowing sail boats, and on the other side by tall cream balconied baroque mansions. It was so lovely”…yes, lovely enough for me to want to hop on a tour bus and go there! So, the book bowls along at a cracking pace. You will learn that the KGB is not in fact KFC, and ET and the FT are not to be confused. Watch out for a vairety of gold shoes, they pop up everwhere (and often) to herald a bit of dressing up in, perhaps, Vera Wang… I wasn’t convinced by the part towards the end, set in a cinema etc in Scotland, felt a bit far fetched.
