Motorbike-riding-Border-Terrier-loving DCI Kate Daniels leads her team in this cracking crime novel that is set across Northumberland, Newcastle and County Durham. Is there a serial killer on the loose targetting girls who, physically, are pretty similar? What’s the motive? A few red herrings scattered along the way, some echoes of past relationships – there are lots of elements that keep this novel bowling along. The chapters aren’t long (which is great for those of us who like to read a few pages before zonking out at night) and some interesting insights into police procedures (yes, sadly, they are far removed from Jack Bauer and 24!). Fabulous if you know – or want to get to know – the North East of England. From Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads to the “yellow glow” as you come into Durham City. I even learned that there is such a thing as a Scotswood Stare (I am assuming this is otherwise called a “hacky”?) and a mention of one of my personal favourites…a vist to Cafe 21 (Terry Laybourne’s restaurant in Newcastle). Enjoy!!
