As an adult, I read this book quickly, but have to say it lingered. It is a tender description in many ways of the friendship between Mathias, a German Jew who has left Germany before WW2 and the daughter of a sardine seller. The destruction of the town of Guernica has been well documented and everyone thinks of Picasso’s painting. This book really brings the build-up and events to life, as well as charting how hard it can be to grow up. A really great read.
