Good read but…

An engrossing read, the history and subject matter for which had clearly been researched in depth by the author. July was an engaging and believable character whose hardships were brought to life in this story of part of her life. The detail of day to day life for slaves in Jamaica and the total disregard for them having rights that we now take for granted kept the book interesting. There were however a couple of aspects that grated – large periods of July’s life being dealt with in what seemed like just a couple of pages and characters which weren’t fully developed / followed up. Overall a good read though and would make me read another book by the same author.
