The Alchemist started well and I felt transported into the hills of Andalucia with Santiago and his sheep. He travels towards the pyramids meeting people and places which change his route, plans and his life on the way. At first I enjoyed the philosophical ideas and questions, the meaning of Santiago’s life, his purpose, and wondered where his journey would take him. But after a while I got tired of all this wondering and really just wanted to hear his story and not be trying to figure out the true meaning of each event and encounter. So if you have time on your hands – as you may on holiday – you may well enjoy this book and I can understand how many people rave about it. I however found it to be hard work and not good to read late at night when I wanted to relax!
