This book is set in Kenya in 1961 as the talks on independence are taking place. The book is about an archeological dig in the Serengeti. It is a page turner with fast moving story lines around love relationships, a murder and subsequent court case and significant archeological findings. I have not visited Kenya but this book gave me a sense of the power struggles that have been going on there. The Maasai tribes ownership of the land, their political ambitions and cultural differences and traditions that often in their view supersede law as we know it. The descriptions of the wildlife and land are very good.
The story line I found to be predictable and at times I felt some of the relationship development was a bit unreal. There is the contrast of city life in Nairobi and the Serengeti. The characters are all interesting though and it is a good read.
