WIN a signed copy of The Second Sleep by Robert Harris, a post apocalyptic thriller set in Wessex.
1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artefacts – coins, fragments of glass, human bones – which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death?
Fairfax becomes determined to discover the truth. Over the course of the next six days, everything he believes – about himself, his faith and the history of his world – will be tested to destruction.

Thank you!
My original hometown of Blackpool. Windy coastline, faded grandeur of a seaside resort, lots of crumbling B&Bs. Great setting for a murder mystery I think!
The lost city of Atlantis!
It would be set in Belfast. Write about what you know!
I would set my novel in my northern hometown of Flin Flon, Manitoba. It is a mining town built on the rocks and amidst the lakes and streams of this beautiful part of Canada.
It would have to be set in Cornwall. It’s where I’ve lived for over twenty-five years and it has amazing contrasts from sleepy fishing villages to rugged cliffs and moors, and it’s still isolated enough to have scope for amazing mysteries. If it was good enough for Daphne Du Maurier…
I would love to set my novel in Venice because it is such a beautiful and enchanting place. I have read a few books based in Venice but there aren’t enough out there in my opinion.
Mine would be set in the Highlands. Enough places for mysteries and romance.
I would set my novel in Malvern in Worcestershire. The British Camp is an old Iron Age Fort located at the top of The Herefordshire Beacon and is part of the beautiful Malvern hills range.
The hill fort is believed to have been constructed in the 2nd century BC and the extensive earthworks are clearly visible today. As a child I used to play there with my sisters and we would make up stories about the people who used to live there. In depth research would no doubt reveal some fascinating stories and legends.
I would set my novel in South Australia in the mid-nineteenth century. I would imbue it with the religious undertones that were prelevant in those times. The main narrative would have a background of summer with blistering heat and days when small birds fall gasping from the sky.
I would set it in London – it’s best to write about the place you know – all the best places to hide and retreat to, etc.
I would set my book in Missouri since that’s where I grew up.
I would set my novel at the top of an active volcano for the quickest reveal ever. Lots of descriptive imagery of the surrounding, the claustrophobic threat of an eruption and all parties facing the death penalty! Perfect.
I will set my novel in the South of France a little village called Les salles du gardon. I will make it a murder mystery with hidden secrets and a couple of murders
Love novels set in foreign locations. Favourite of mine is Greece.

Great to hear. We do too!!!
I’m fascinated by places which change their accessibility depending on the changing seasons or tide levels. Having once visited a tiny island by walking across to it at low tide, I spent the next few hours worrying about the return trip.
The Highlands in Scotland x
If I were writing a thriller, I would consider setting it in Borneo, as I lived there for 3+ years & they say to write what you know!
There is the former tradition of headhunting, people sneaking up on you in the jungle & lopping your head off with a swift blow of the parang!
Also, there is a strong belief in spirits or hantu, all kinds of rituals have to be observed in the jungle to pacify them & ensure a safe passage!
There are snakes & spiders aplenty to add to the danger factor!
I think a rather creepy/spooky novel could be set there!
I would set my historical time slip novel in Vindolanda, in Northumberland. So much scope for mystery, murder and mayhem.
Mine would be set in New Zealand – prefect for a modern novel, historical setting or fantasy!
The Caribbean where I used to work.
The Scottish Highlands, my favourite holiday destination and where we hope to live one day.
