The authors pose this question and it seems so relevant right now, in the midst of a pandemic, than they could ever have thought possible when they started writing it three years ago! The world is plunged into darkness for 12 minutes. Imagine the fear and the reactions to that fear if it were to happen? We’ve seen the fear that has sparked from the world being plunged into a pandemic in action in real life already. When the darkness fades, a man called Joe appears. What follows is surprising.
The responses of world leaders to his appearance are similar to the narrative of the Gospels, but they feel realistic and modern and timely. This isn’t a religious book but it does pose the question of what would the world and its leaders do if they needed to join together to stop the destruction of Planet Earth – a trajectory that many of us believe we’re already on thanks to global warming, over population, pollution, politics, greed and war. Joe may be the ‘Second Coming’ but his real human nature is shown through his actions and words, his revisions of the commandments into 12 guidelines for us all to live by (such as be kind) and he gets into a sexual relationship with female protagonist Sophie.
Yes, this is an entertaining read, but actually, it’s more than that. It’s a book that is written to shine a spotlight on what’s happening in the world, and our role as individuals, and the role of our world leaders, in trying to change the course of our planet’s destruction…
