The Dream of Jack Love

The Dream of Jack Love

Author(s): D W Haggard

Location(s): East London

Genre(s): Magical Realism, Young Adult

Era(s): 1980

Great YA fiction – Jack Love is lives in Woodford with his Grandmother, is autistic and is obsessed with the Central Line. He is a great footballer – plays for Ashton FC and is a gifted and artist. His parents are missing and with the arrival of a new art teacher at his school his quest for discovery begins when he is entered in the Prince’s Saturday Art School. A visit to the National Gallery and the impact of Henri Rousseau place Jack on a magical realism path where his true identity is found. This is a wonderful story and appeals to boys and girls and also to parents and teachers as well. It has an immediate style but is a satire and absurdist in parts which I enjoyed reading after my son Max had finished it (he brought it home from school).
