FLASH GIVEAWAY for WORLD BOOK DAY
2nd March 2022
FLASH GIVEAWAY for WORLD BOOK DAY (3 March 2022)
OPEN UK ONLY
I have recently been involved in judging the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2022 (Fiction, With a Sense of Place). It has been a joy to read through such a diverse selection of titles, a true pleasure to engage with so many writing styles, diverse storylines and wonderful places around then world. The aim of the Award is to recognise an author’s ability to capture a really good sense of place and bring it to the reader.
Thus it is that over the last few weeks I have been to Buenos Aires, Morocco, Barcelona, England, Cyrpus and Cape Cod and each author has strived to capture their chosen setting with just little constructs that are sufficient to bring a place to life: the susurration of insects, the sights, sounds and smells of a city, the lushness of countryside and the feel of place (it’s not easy to do!). Delightfully, those authors who have chosen to set their titles a little while ago and give their stories a historical slant, understand the value of bringing to life the echoes of footsteps past. The winner will be announced tomorrow evening (3rd March( at a special even in London.
To mark World Book Day we are offering one lucky winner – UK only – the chance to win all 6 books in the Fiction, With a Sense of Place Shortlist.
The Paper Palace by Mirande Cowley Heller

Barcelona Dreaming by Rupert Thomson sounds a good read, especially as I would love to visit Barcelona one day.
All of these books look amazing but the plot of
The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller has really caught my attention.
Sounds like a really epic, gripping storyline that will keep the reader completely hooked from start to finish!
I should like to read Elena Knows by Claudia Pineiro. Thank you for this opportunity.
Island of missing trees – sounds interesting and lovely cover
They all sound wonderful and fascinating but if I had to choose just one it would be The Paper Palace. Many thanks.
I’d like to read all of these but Elena Knows by Claudia Piñeiro would be at the top of my list!
The Country of Others 🙂
The High House by Jessica Greengrass would be my first choice to read from the synopsis given for each book.
I would most like to read Elif Shafak’s ‘ The Island of Missing Trees’ as it’s been on my wishlist for a while!
I’m currently loving books set in the Mid 20th century so I’d make a beeline for The Country of Others
Oh Heck!
How can you possibly force a girl to choose between these delicious storylines and locations, all so different, all so tempting??
OK, so choose I must, in which case ‘The Paper Palace’ would win by the thickness of one of its printed pages!
If nothing else, my ‘wish list’ has just grown by another six books 🙂
I’d love them all, but especially The Paper Palace. I’ve heard amazing things about it.
I’ve been really looking forward to reading Paper Palace.
All of these books look great! I would probably opt to read Elif Shafak’s ‘ The Island of Missing Trees’ first, because I have been to Cyprus, have witnessed the eeriness of the Green Line in Nicosia, with the call to prayer wafting over on the breeze from the north side, and heard from Greek & Turkish Cypriot friends of the sadness at looking out and being able to see ones former home now occupied by the other side.
I really enjoy Elif’s writing!
They’re all calling to me for different reasons but if you’re forcing me to choose just one then it will be The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. I thought 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World was outstanding because of the way she evoked the spirit of Istanbul. So now I’m keen to know if she can do the same for Cyprus.
I would love to read The High House!
Having enjoyed hearing Elif Shafak being interviewed a couple of times, I’d most like to read The Island of Missing Trees.
The plot also interests me, as it sounds like there are some parallels with my Greek Orthodox great-grandmother marrying my great-grandfather, an Iranian Muslim. Spoiler alert: it didn’t go well…
I’d love The Country of Others by Leila Slimani please! Thank you
I would like to read The Country of Others by Leïla Slimani, please!
I’ve heard only good things about Elif Shafak
