Lead Review (The Machine Murders)
- Book: The Machine Murders
- Location: Mykonos
- Author: C J Abazis
3.5*
Manos Manu is on Mykonos for a wedding but becomes involved in the investigation of a brutal killing, with a chain through the stomach tied to a buoy and an anchor. It is within pages that he determines this is the work of serial killer and I couldn’t quite fathom how he fully came to the conclusion.
Investigating crime has ramped up considerably with the advent of a new computer system, social media investigations sharpen the focus and good old detective work digs deep to uncover what is going on.
The formatting of the novel is quite unusual and there are spaces between paragraphs – I think one can understand why books are presented in a certain, standard way. The book’s layout makes it harder to read – as the eye travels down the page, the linear movement keeps being interrupted. Fuzzy photos I am sure are meant to add atmosphere, and they do make a statement but I wonder if they ultimately detract, it feels like bad printing – although I can see what the author wanted to do.
It’s fast paced and savvy in many ways, confusing in others – but then I struggle to really get to grips with AI, which is at the heart. Ideal for readers who like sharp and fast moving reads.
