Four Treasures of the Sky by Jenny Tinghui Zhang

A young Chinese girl, Daiyu, is smuggled from China to the Western USA, where she has to find her way through life despite tremendous obstacles thrown in her path. It is not only the ‘Wild West’ – so different to China – but the hostility she faces given the Chinese Exclusion Act.

This is a tale of resilience and fortitude, written in a deft and compelling style, which has clearly been well researched.
