The Girl Who Crossed Mountains
Location(s): San Sebastian, The Basque Country, The Pyrenees
Genre(s): Historical, Fiction
Era(s): 1930s
On either side of the Pyrenees mountains, two women will risk everything to do what’s right…
Abene García, a fisherman’s daughter, must make a terrible choice: risk being caught in the crossfires of the escalating Spanish Civil War or abandon her seaside home of San Sebastian and make the perilous journey across the Pyrenees to the border of France. But when the Nazi occupation begins, the safety she finds on the other side of the mountains is shattered. Abene won’t stand by and do nothing while innocent Jewish men, women and children are in desperate need, not when she knows a way to escape – over the mountains she crossed not so long before.
Miren Torres, a secretary for the Basque government, makes a life-changing decision when she follows her fiancé to the city of Bilbao. But after the nationalist forces take over, her fiancé disappears and Miren is forced to return to San Sabastian alone. Back on the cobbled streets of her seaside home, at the outbreak of the Second World War, she unwittingly catches the eye of one of Franco’s most powerful Generals, a bully who is determined to marry her.
Brought together by the forces of war, the two women will risk everything to save innocent lives and protect their families…
