The reader is privy to the internal workings and machinations of this woman’s thoughts, as she heads for a concert in Rome. One long sentence is an unusual literary structure and works to stunning effect. And Rome is observed as the protagonist muses on her situation, her husband, the city, and the effect of the world – Rome is the navel of the world, therefore little chance that the Eternal City would ever be bombed by the Allies
