Lead Review (I Would Die For You)

In 2011 Nicole Forbes is well settled in family life. She is a great defender of the local seal colony and goes to some lengths to protect their interests. Out of the blue someone contacts her, enquiring about a certain Ben Edwards. His name more than resonates with her and clearly there is some kind of history she has had with this man. Shortly thereafter, her daughter, Hannah, goes missing. She just knows that there is a connection, and of course goes into overdrive to garner all the resources to find her precious child. It transpires that Hannah’s “Auntie” picked her up (it felt just a little preposterous that a woman whom Hannah had never met – even if she purported to be her Auntie – would be able to take her out of school).
In 1986 16 year old Cassie and her friend Amelia are very keen on the band Secret Oktober and it is Ben Edwards who is the front man. Cassie is also Nicole’s little sister and the enthusiasm and daredevilry the two girls undertake to get near to their heartthrobs is quite something.
Nicole knows that the secret she has been hiding for 30 years is on the verge of being exposed and it all boils down to events back in the 80s that involved the frontman, the very same man with whom her younger sister was infatuated.
There is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between characters and time periods. It bowls along at a good pace, it’s easy enough to read but just feels, at base, that it is teetering on the edge of being a bit silly. If you like stories that move between timelines and involve popular pop groups, then The Penthouse by Catherine Cooper (set in London and Las Vegas) might be an option.
The cover is a stock image, depicting apparently the coast of La Jolla but to me it doesn’t scream California, it looks more like Greece…
