Historical novel set in 1910s LEICESTERSHIREA woman of Spirit by Margaret Dickinson, historical novel set in 1910s LEICESTERSHIRE

Young women, Queenie and Molly, are great friends, they live near to each other and have grown up together. Both have their eye on Harry but Queenie is the more out-going of the two and thus it is Queenie who steps out with him. Queenie can at times be a flibbertigibbet and Molly soon outs herself as the more serious and morally strong of the two.

On outings in the park, Queenie and Harry – for the sake of propriety – need to be chaperoned and it falls to Molly and Ben, his brother, to accompany them. They stumble upon a suffragette gathering and Molly, in particular, is fired up by the principles of the movement and, as she becomes more involved, a distinct strain is put on the girls’ friendship.

Molly discovers how divisive her growing allegiance to the movement is, even within her own family and as time passes, she seems to be framed for acts of vandalism, not unknown amongst the suffragettes, adhering to their motto “Deeds Not Words”.

Then WW1 breaks out and many of the young men decide to enlist. White feathers are posted through certain doors and suspicion once again is focussed on Molly. She has to muster all her strength and perspicuity to clear her name.

Margaret Dickinson is acknowledged as the “Queen of Saga” (Daily Express) and has, to date, written well over 30 titles. A Woman of Spirit is an involving novel of suspicion, friendship under duress, family life and the rigours of societal change.

Setting is minimal.
