A Dystopian adventure set in an ENGLAND of the near future
Announcing the winners of the inaugural TripFiction ‘Sense of Place’ Creative Writing Competition
13th December 2020
This autumn, as the world finally took its first tentative steps towards a post pandemic world, we invited adventurous writers to create new stories. Ideas that transported people to a place where imaginations could escape from the claustrophobia of locked down lives and restricted travel.
The response comfortably beat our expectations – close on 400 entries from 35 countries around the world. We were impressed by the quality of the work submitted, and it was a real challenge to reduce these down first to a longlist and then a shortlist of just 10 for the final judging by publisher Katharina Bielenberg, author David Hewson, and TripFiction founder Tina Hartas.
They determined the prizewinning entries to be:
First Prize (of £300)
The Return by Janet Few, a story set in Seahouses on the Northumbrian coast both now and 40 years ago
Second Prize (of £150)
The Alphabet of Life by Rebecca Stonehill, a non-chronological journey through the forty-three years of her life. Set around the world
Third Prize (of £50)
The Trade by Debbie Parrott. Set in Papua New Guinea. A village girl, who loves to read, determines to trade with some white tourists in exchange for a book

Following the success of this year’s inaugural event we have already decided to come back next year with an even bigger competition. We’ll be announcing the details over the Northern Hemisphere summer, and the closing date will be the 31st October 2021
