The novel is set in Murka, a fictional country (in fact America) The government decrees: unemployed single males are the cause of crime. They must be deported to Tract 1. They can only return to Murka if they pass the Interview.
The main characters:
San, who hates work. The everydayness/ insideness/ clean clothes/shaven of it.
Vivi, whose lips sat in an innocent smirk.
Pince, someone who seems to regard a successful conversation as a meaningful event.
Bilan, from Ococonea, where there are no rivers or mountains, just the Little Chisels and Baron Beauties.
