Author(s): Manju Kapur

Location(s): Delhi

Genre(s): Fiction

Era(s): 1990s

Largely set in upper-middle-class Delhi in the 1990s, kapur’s fifthe novel opens iwth a premise familiar in fables – that the beautiful and lucky can do what they want, usually at the expense of the less fortunate. The story centres on two women: plain Ishita, and lovely but shallow Shagun, whose marriage ends in bitter divorce after she is seduced by her husband’s boss. Exploring the consequences of Shagun’s actions, Kapur proves once again that she is a literary novelist whose characters and plots are so gripping you can hardly bear her books to end.
