Falling for Saigon

Falling for Saigon

Author(s): Connie Stokes

Location(s): Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Genre(s): Travelogue

Era(s): Contemporary

A series of love letters (short essays) to Ho Chi Minh City — still known as Saigon to locals. A long-term resident of the city, the author knows the city well and captures what it feels like to live there, gorging on street food, drinking alongside the locals, wandering in the alleyways (with no particular destination), or cycling in the backstreets to catch a breeze in the evening. He also writes about the strain of development on a rapidly developing urban hub, the hidden musicality of the city — and its many, many ghosts – quite a number of whom appear to be well-fed and cared for….

All in all, for the author, despite the city’s challenges (scorching heat, monsoonal downpours, traffic congestion, questionable urban planning), Saigon is a vibrant and fascinating place that is not only easy to fall for — it’s also a very hard place to leave!
