Girls in Tin Hats

Girls in Tin Hats

Author(s): Annie Murray

Location(s): Birmingham

Genre(s): Fiction

Era(s): WW II

A saga set in Small Heath, Birmingham during the Second World War. It tells the story of two girls Violet and Grace, their lives during the war, their day jobs and their voluntary war work as Air Raid Precaution Wardens in the evenings and weekends and after being on duty on the ARP posts at night, still had to report for work the next morning. It talks about the bombing of Coventry in November 1940, the air strike on the Birmingham Small Arms Factory (BSA) the staff were busy making guns and the demolition of the nearby Holy Family Catholic School (where my mother was a pupil at the time). It talks about First Aid Posts being set up at the local swimming baths and weaves the story of the girls and their family and friends. A very true to life story of Small Heath during the war.
