This novel from Booker Prize-winning author Barry Unsworth, takes place in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) in 1914, shortly before the outbreak of the First World. Virtually every European country is in Iraq, waiting for the weakened Ottoman Empire to fall. A railroad is being built from Basra through Baghdad to Constantinople. John Somerville, a thirty-five-year-old archaeologist has been working for at Tell Erdek, an ancient site near Baghdad but which has so far yielded few artifacts and his site is right in the line of the new railroad. He has to protect his dig from all quarters, with some excellent archaelogical detail.
