Modern day Steven is writing the story of William Dawes, who is one of the first Englishmen to set foot on Australia. His mission is to set up an astrological observatory to study the skies in the southern hemisphere. He travels on the first convict ship sent out and the story centres around the clearing of the land and the building of a settlement in what is later to become the city of Sydney. William is a moral person and is troubled by the way the convicts are treated, as well as the view that the indigenous people are ignorant.
