29th April 2025

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors, novel set in USA, LONDON, PARIS.

Novel set in USA, LONDON, PARIS

This is the story of four female siblings, born to a couple in Manhattan. Avery is the eldest, still over-functioning for Lucky and Bonnie and trying to hold things together for everyone after the death of Nicky, who had endometriosis, struggled with the pain of condition and seemingly overdosed. It is a year ago and now the under-functioning parents have given the girls notice that they are going to sell the apartment.

A good portion of the novel is devoted to building the women’s backstories, the trials they have faced during their lives and their addictive personalities, doubtless derived from their lacklustre upbringing. Avery (in Hampstead), after a period of alcoholism, has reinvented herself as a lawyer. Bonnie (in Venice Beach) has literally fought her way through the boxing circuit; and Lucky (now based in Paris) has had the wonderful opportunity to travel the world as a model but cannot resist the hedonistic partying, alcohol and drug taking – her self sabotage is particularly pronounced.

Novel set in USA, LONDON, PARISThey clearly have issues with their parents, their father was violent and their mother disengaged in her parental role. Consequently there is enough psychological fall out to build a solid and convincing story around the siblings. Once that is firmly established – and the author does a really good job of moving between the characters and building their profiles – the story then seems to lose its way a little, as they all decide to assemble in New York and pay their last respects to their dead sister and the apartment.

This is an interesting and engaging read and I was drawn to read it because of the noise around it on Social Media and I very much liked the eye-catching cover.

New York comes across well in the final stages of the novel: “As they walked to the club, the sidewalk shimmered with the glitter that is inexplicably poured into the city’s cement, that curious combination of glisten and grime that was simply New York”
