This warm and humorous book records a young Australian family’s extended trip to Italy, where they aim to discover how to run a smallholding successfully. Their plan is to learn new skills that can be translated to their life on their own patch of land back home in the Adelaide Hills. In reality, they learn so much more; about Italian history, baking bread, the language – and themselves. Pip, Shannon and their young boys are delightful, as are the varied characters they meet along the way. Some of the challenges they face are a test of character. It’s easy to empathise with Pip as she tries to balance the demands of work as a ‘woofer’ – temporary agricultural worker – with those of her family. They work on a variety of farms in different Italian regions, and even manage to squeeze in a bit of sightseeing. There are some delightful long-running themes, such as the hunt for the elusive Pokemon ice-cream, and it all adds up to a delightful, compelling read.
