Winter in Madrid is the perfect book to combine mystery, history and romance. From start to finish the book unfolds in a very subtle non-obvious way, to reveal each characters hidden past, and true present. The story follows Harry Brett, a survivor of Dunkirk who is turned spy for the British Secret Service, just after the Spanish civil war. He’s forced to investigate into his old school mate, Sandy Forsyth, who is suspected of being involved with the fascists in Spain. But it isn’t only Sandy who surprises Harry, Sandy’s girlfriend Barbara is on his own mission, to find out what happened to the true love of her life, and being Sandy’s girlfriend is just a step in order to get there. A very good page-turner, which really sets the scene of how Madrid survived during the 1940’s. Beautifully set in amongst the back streets and famous Landmarks of Madrid. A must read.
