But this family has fallen apart, tugged in every direction, blaming themselves and each other. Reading the book is compelling; not quite in the same way as watching a car crash unfold, because Eliza, on her first visit to the island, brings with her understanding and hope, the vaguest sense that things just might be able to change. And Broom makes you care so much for her characters, so imperfect but perfectly drawn, that you’re left with an almost visceral need for them to all find their peace.
